Meizu is the world's 11th largest smartphone maker, with over 20 million units sold in 2015. Alibaba spent $590 million in Meizu in February 2015, acquiring an undisclosed minority interest. Meizu shifted its attention to smartphones in 2008. Meizu Technology Co., Ltd., based in Zhuhai, Guangdong, is a Chinese consumer electronics firm. Meizu began as a maker of MP3 players and later MP4 devices, founded in 2003 by Jack Wong. Meizu launched their first smartphone, the Meizu M8, in January 2007, and it was completely released in April 2007. The Mymobile operating system, which was based on Microsoft Windows CE 6.0, was used by the Meizu M8.
