Apple is holding its yearly launch event on September 14 this year and just like last year, it is entirely virtual. Here’s everything we are expecting at the event based on the leaks and rumors.
We are expecting the lineup for the new iPhones to be exactly like last year’s 12 series. A 5.4-inch iPhone 13 mini, a 6.1-inch iPhone 13, a 6.1-inch iPhone 13 Pro, and a 6.7-inch iPhone 13 Pro Max.
As for the design, the overall design scheme should be identical to the iPhone 12 series but with a few minor changes. The new phone could be slightly thicker but we can expect some new colors, like Graphite, a Bronze and a rumored Pink. We are also expecting the volume and power buttons to be slightly lower and in a little more comfortable position.
As for the cameras, they could be slightly bigger and the iPhone 13 mini and iPhone 13 will have lenses arranged diagonally. The 13 Pro and the 13 Pro Max are rumored to get the biggest camera improvements. We can expect larger sensors allowing a lot more low light photography along with f/1.8 autofocus on the Ultrawide lens. A new report shows that cinematic video mode will work like Portrait mode but for video, and Apple is adding ProRes support to the Pro models, which is the video equivalent of ProRAW.
For the front, we can expect improvements to FaceID and a similar notch to the iPhone 12. The iPhone 13 lineup could also feature a 120Hz ProMotion display with a highly anticipated Always-on Display.
The inside of the phone will feature an A15 chipset which will bring slight performance and battery life improvements. As for battery life, we are expecting larger battery cells as well as faster 25W fast charging (wired). The iPhone 13 models may support up to 1TB storage for the first time, up from the prior 512GB maximum.
Apple Watch Series 7
The Apple Watch is rumored to get a redesign after a very long time. It is expected to feature flatter edges to go with Apple’s flat-edged iPhones. The Apple Watch is also becoming 1mm thicker to 41mm and 45mm, from the 40mm and 44mm we had earlier. Along with slightly thinner bezels, we can expect a much bigger display on this year’s Apple watch.
We are also expecting an S7 chip, which is smaller than the chip in the previous watches, freeing up space for other components like a bigger battery. We can also expect a new green color on the watch.
Apple has reportedly been having some difficulties ramping up mass production of the Apple Watch Series 7, so while we expect to see an introduction at this event, its actual launch could be delayed a bit compared to the iPhone 13 or initially be available only in very limited quantities.
At the September event, we are also expecting a redesign to the affordable AirPods making their design more like the more expensive AirPods Pro. We’re expecting an AirPods Pro design with shorter stems although, information about new tips is still unclear.
A new set of components could also be a possibility. The AirPods 3 won’t get AirPods Pro features like Noise Cancellation, and they’ll still be the most affordable AirPods.
Aside from software updates to its entire lineup, that is all we are expecting this event. The MacBooks could be launched at a later event in the same month but they are unlikely to be launched at this event. Apple could shake up all markets with a new version of its devices and it will be interesting to see what they have in store for us!
