The Creator of the PUBG Mobile Game Has Donated Rs 1.5 crore to The PM CARES Fund

Krafton, the South Korean creator of PUBG Mobile, has donated Rs.1.5 crore to the Prime Minister’s PM CARES Fund, possibly in yet another attempt to convey its India friendliness. The Fund was established last year to raise funds for COVID-19 relief efforts in India, as opposed to the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund, which is already designated for such purposes. Over the last year or so, the fund has collected contributions from a variety of organizations, including major corporations such as Google, Amazon, and Microsoft. Krafton’s contribution was made through its newly created Indian subsidiary.

“With the latest wave of COVID-19, India is managing a difficult time. We remain committed to assisting the government in addressing this unprecedented crisis. We hope that our donation to the PM CARES Fund will help the existing aid efforts on the ground,” said Changhan (CH) Kim, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Kraton, in a statement. The company stated that it “wishes to join hands” with the Indian government in the battle against COVID-19, providing needed medical assistance, purchasing oxygen supplies, and extending additional services to citizens in the region.

Krafton Inc has been attempting to make inroads with the Indian government for some time now, attempting to lift the ban on its flagship game, PUBG Mobile, which has been in place since October of last year. The rights to the game were owned by Chinese Tencent in India, which landed it in trouble with the government after the Galwan Valley clash between India and China.

Though Krafton has since stripped Tencent of the rights and stated that a separate game will be developed for India, there has been no indication of a return. The company established an Indian subsidiary and announced the development of a separate game for the country called PUBG Mobile India. It was also planning to recruit people in the country and had posted job openings on LinkedIn. However, the Indian government has indicated that such steps might not be sufficient to restore the game’s legal status in the region.
