Severe Battery Drain Being Caused by iOS 14.2

Reddit and Apple Developer forums are widely receiving reports by users claiming that iOS 14.2 is causing severe battery drain issues.

Longer charge time than usual and rapid battery drain are some of the symptoms of the problem. Some users are also claiming that their devices are losing more than half of their charge in less than 30 minutes, and observing huge drops of about five percent within a few minutes of normal use.

Many users are also experiencing malfunctions like battery life sticking at high percentages before dropping low, as well as observing a sudden escalation in battery life after restarting their phones. This tends to make the users believe that the issue is software-related.

It seems to appear that this problem is mainly being faced by slightly older iPhones like iPhone XS, iPhone 7, iPhone 6S, and the first-generation iPhone SE. iPadOS 14.2 based 2018 iPad Pro also seems to be affected.

iOS 14.2 and iPadOS 14.2 had arrived just two weeks after iOS 14.1 and iPadOS 14.1, as the second major updates to the iOS and iPadOS 14 operating systems, released in September. The update included new emojis, AirPods Optimized Battery Charging, Intercom, People Detection, and new wallpapers.

iOS 14.2.1 sought to address bugs with MMS messages, a significant issue with screen responsiveness on the iPhone 12 mini, and Made for iPhone hearing devices. However, there have been no reports of the battery issue being fixed.

The public betas and third developer of iOS 14.3 and iPadOS 14.3 have been released already, so the problem may be possibly fixed by Apple in the upcoming update. This third major update to iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 brings support for Apple ProRAW, as well as refinements to Home, Health, and Weather.

If not done already, users with older devices may wish to hold off on updating to iOS 14.2 until the issue is fixed by Apple.
