Samsung is undoubtedly working on the Galaxy S22 series, as the company has traditionally released a Galaxy S flagship in the first half of each year. This year’s Galaxy S21 Ultra follows in the footsteps of Huawei by including two telephoto cameras (3X and 10X), but a new rumor suggests that Samsung will up the ante significantly.
According to Weibo tipper Ice Universe, Samsung’s Galaxy S22 Ultra will include a camera with continuous optical zoom. Ice claims that Samsung Electro-Mechanics and Samsung Semiconductor are developing the technology.

Many dedicated cameras offer continuous optical zoom, which involves moving components within the camera module to enable a variety of native zoom factors with consistent image quality. This eliminates the need for hybrid zoom, digital zoom, and other software-based techniques that produce lower-quality results. Because it lacks these moveable components, a phone with a 3X telephoto camera, for example, still uses hybrid zoom and other inferior processing techniques for zoomed images below and above 3X.

Ice Universe also discusses other exciting Samsung Galaxy S22 features, such as an under-display selfie camera. The technology isn’t particularly novel, and ZTE beat Samsung to the punch by releasing the world’s first smartphone with an under-display selfie camera. According to rumors, the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 will, as well.
As per the source, Samsung’s 2022 device will also include an under-display selfie camera and a Samsung processor with an AMD GPU. The latter is unsurprising given that Samsung Semiconductor previously confirmed to Android Authority that its next Exynos flagship processor would include AMD graphics.
We’ve also heard that the Galaxy Z Fold 3 will have an under-display selfie camera, so it stands to reason that an S22 series device will have one as well if the foldable does.
It’s worth noting that Ice Universe has a solid but not entirely dependable track record, and they occasionally engage in speculative speculation. As a result, we recommend that you take their leaks with a grain of salt. Nonetheless, this zoom technology, or Sony’s approach, appears to be a logical next step after the S21 Ultra.
