Qualcomm has launched a brand new chipset that will power the high-end flagship phones of 2022. Instead of continuing from Snapdragon 888 and beyond, Qualcomm has switched it to “Snapdragon 8 Gen 1,” a decent name. Qualcomm launched this chip at the Snapdragon Tech Summit earlier today.
As with all processors and Qualcomm’s yearly tradition, this chip will deliver better performance, battery life, AI power, and 5G. This new chipset is based on the Armv9 architecture from Arm. This new chipset has switched to a 4nm process instead of the 5nm they had earlier. Digging deeper, this chip is a single prime core based on the Cortex-X2 at 3.0GHz, along with three performance cores based on Cortex-A710 at 2.5GHz, and a quartet of efficiency cores based on the Cortex-A510 design at 1.8GHz.
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 will offer 20% faster raw CPU power and 30% better power efficiency than last year’s Snapdragon 888 flagship chipset.
As for the graphics side, the new Adreno GPU will give 30% faster render times while also offering 25% better power efficiency, again, compared to last year’s Snapdragon 888. It is still unclear what the exact number of Adreno GPUs this chip is using.
Aside from raw performance, these new chips come with motion smoothing technology. This is specifically important in the gaming industry, wherein even games being played at a relatively low frame rate will appear smooth.
This chip is also the first time Qualcomm boasts their all-new X65 modem that claims to deliver much higher 5g connectivity speeds. This also supports Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth LE Audio, and AptX Lossless wireless audio.
With this chip, Qualcomm allows phones to record 8K video with HDR 10 plus and 18 bit RAW. This will only be possible if the phone has the relevant hardware specifications, of course.
This chip focuses heavily on its AI capabilities. It boasts an all-new Hexagon processor with its seventh-generation AI engine. This processor is 4 times faster than its predecessor and is 1.7 times more power-efficient at the same time.
Qualcomm has said that the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor phones will be out by the end of this year. Brands like Xiaomi have already confirmed that their Xiaomi 12 will come with this new processor.
