OPPO Teases World’s First Smartphone With a Retractable Rear Camera

With OPPO’s INNO Day 2021 event just around the corner, the company has already started to reveal its upcoming innovations on its social media handles. The latest is a brief video teasing the world’s first smartphone with a retractable camera.

According to the aforementioned video which was posted on OPPO’s Twitter handle, the retractable camera is shown extending horizontally from the phone’s housing. At the same time, the video also suggests that the mechanism might be waterproof, and it’ll automatically retract the camera if the phone is dropped somehow.

Unlike the pop-up selfie cameras that move along the X-Axis to hide inside a phone, moving the camera back and forth on the Z-axis could provide major improvements to the image quality. However, OPPO still hasn’t disclosed whether this new feature is just for its visual appeal or provides any real-life improvement to the camera’s performance.

OPPO has been known to experiment with new technologies earlier, and this is not the first time that the company has revealed a new camera technology that feels to be taken right out of a science fiction book, as we have seen with its Reno Series 5G, which featured a wedge-shaped, motorized pop-up front-facing camera on the top of the phone.

Overall, it looks like this new weird yet amazing technology could be here to stay, and we can expect to know more about this new camera technology along with OPPO’s other innovations at the OPPO INNO Day 2021 event, which will be held across two days, starting from December 14th till 15th.
