OPPO Double-Sided Wrap-Around Display Smartphone – Since the smartphone manufacturers are capable of developing a smartphone with a flexible display, various types of devices are surfacing online.
The concept of the wrap-around display has always been fascinating in the smartphone market, as it brings endless new possibilities that can help a user perform tasks easily. This time it is Oppo who is considering releasing a double-sided phone.
On 4 May 2021, Guangdong Oppo Mobile Telecommunications patented the device at the World Intellectual Property Office. The documentation, entitled ‘Method for assembling and disassembling electronic equipment, describes in detail the assembly and disassembly possibilities of an Oppo smartphone with a large flexible screen.

It is a dual-sided smartphone, in which the front, rear and left side of the device has a display surface. A-frame edge remains visible on the right side, as well as above and below. An extended trim is also installed on the back to accommodate a vertical camera system.
In order to better visualize the patented device, Dutch graphic designer Jermaine Smit, aka Concept Creator, produced a series of product renderings in collaboration with LetsGoDigital. These images are based on Oppo’s patent images and documentation and are for reference only.
A double-sided smartphone can meet the increasing demand from users for a multifunctional, portable device – the documentation states. However, assembling such a device and replacing parts is not that simple.
Oppo has thoroughly documented how the screen should be glued to the middle frame, so that it can be disassembled professionally afterwards. An ultra-thin steel plate is used and positioned between the display and the frame. This ensures that the flexible screen is optimally supported and a relatively thin screen can be used.

While the patent mainly deals with assembling this duplex Oppo smartphone, there is also a lot of discussion about the camera. The camera system will include multiple lenses. The images show 4 cameras and a flash. The documentation also indicates that extra cameras may be added as an option in the future.
For the 3D renders, we assumed that one of these cameras contains a periscopic zoom lens. Finally, Oppo now has a large number of smartphone models in its range with a zoom lens that supports 5x or 10x Hybrid Zoom – including the Oppo Find X3 Pro and the Oppo Reno 4 Pro.
Because Oppo’s double-sided smartphone has both a camera and display on the back, there is no need to implement a front camera. Finally, the user can take high-resolution selfies and make video calls through the primary camera. Therefore, the whole front consists of the screen surface, without notches or holes in the screen.
The display area on the left side of the device can be used to display general status information, such as a battery indicator and signal intensity. You can also view notifications and incoming calls.
