In April 2018, TBS broadcasted the first 13-episode anime, which Crunchyroll streamed live. In December 2018, the series’ English dub debuted on Adult Swim’s Toonami block. New anime shorts were included in the show’s home video releases in Japan. In June 2019, Viz Media licensed the anime and released it on home video.

The series features an original plot and commemorates the 50th anniversary of Ikki Kajiwara’s (pen name Asao Takamori) and Tetsuya Chiba’s Ashita no Joe manga. In the latest story, a man named JD (Junk Dog) survives by taking part in predetermined boxing matches in an underground arena. He returns to the ring today, but this time he meets a familiar face. JD needs to take on a mission that would put his life in jeopardy.
