PDF can be surprisingly big, it could be hard to manage and share via email or any other platform if you don’t know how to reduce PDF size without losing quality. Whether it’s a standard PDF or encrypted (password-protected) file, there are few easy-to-use programs and apps that can compress the size of a PDF file and make it smaller.
Here are some applications, that you can use to reduce PDF files size:
- Adobe Acrobat
- DocuPub
- SmallPDF
- Preview
- 4DotsFree PDF Compress
For the tutorial purpose, we have chosen Adobe Acrobat. You don’t need any other application if you’ve Adobe Acrobat on your device. This application has a tool called PDF Optimiser, that lets you compress the PDF File.
Step 1:
Open the file in Acrobat.
Step 2:
select ‘Tools’ .
Step 3:
Click on ‘PDF Optimiser’ from the drop-down menu.

Step 4:
A toolbar with a few options will appear just above the PDF, select ‘Reduce File Size’.
Step 5:
Once you do that, Acrobat will apply default settings to reduce its size.
Step 6:
Within the ‘Advanced Optimisation’ option, you can control the quality of the image, fonts, transparency, and more.

Step 7:
Click on the ‘Audit Space Usage’ from the top-left corner in the advanced optimization window to see how much space each kind of element is taking in the file.
Step 8:
Click ‘OK’.
Congratulation, you have now successfully reduced the size of a PDF file without losing quality 🙂
