One of the great things about Android is custom ROMs! Follow this guide if you’re ready to ditch your stock ROM and enjoy the many advantages of loading a custom ROM, such as improved battery life, improved performance, and updates to the new Android versions. Before you begin, make a backup of your files!

You’ll need the following items to complete this guide:

Step 1: Download a ROM

Using the appropriate Android forum, look for a ROM for your phone. Make sure you get the one that’s right for your system. Many phones come in a variety of configurations. The Sony Z Ultra comes in more configurations than I have friends, and each one needs different ROMs depending on the carrier. As a result, double-check that the ROM you’re having is compatible with your phone model.

Once you’ve found the ROM you want, you’ll need to download the.ZIP file, which could be anything from 500MB to 1.5GB or more. Do not attempt to extract it! Then look for the corresponding GApps [if the ROM already has GApps, there’s no need to look]. You’ll need a GApps kit for Android 8.0 from Here if you’re downloading an Android 8.0 ROM. Save your ROM and GApps to a hard drive, SD card, or internal storage.

Step 2: Boot into Recovery

Using your recovery combo buttons to enter recovery mode. This guide will show you how to access recovery if you don’t know which buttons to push. Holding Vol Down + Power for 5 seconds on most phones. You should see something like this after you’ve recovered…

Step 3: Flash ROM

Select “Install” from the drop-down menu…

After you’ve chosen your ROM file. Continue to flash the zip…

Step 4: Clear Cache

Back out and clear your cache after the installation is over…

While this is the most popular method of flashing a ROM, there are several other methods that are unique to each system. I’ll go through a couple of the most popular pieces of software for flashing ROMs from your device. When flashing the stock ROM back onto your phone, these are preferable.

  • For Nexus devices, use Nexus Root Toolkit
  • For Samsung devices, use Odin
  • For Sony devices, use FlashTool
