How to enable SD-Card storage on your Chromebook for Android applications

When it comes to SD card support on mobile devices, there’s no denying the fact that Google has been rocky at best. While the American multinational technology company has been constantly stepping up in terms of Chrome OS SD card features, there might be a glitch we now know how to fix.

How to get Chromebook Android apps to see your SD card

Let’s get started, first, you need to open your Chromebook’s setting, then click “Device”, select “Storage Management”, then “External Storage Preferences”, and finally identify and enable SD card, as shown in the picture below. Or you can just simply search for “External Storage Preferences” in settings or in the Chrome OS launcher and enter the menu. Once done, restart your pc before proceeding.

Once you are done with restarting your system, go to Chrome OS settings again and scroll all the way to the Google Play Store option and select “Manage Android preferences” or you can just simply type “Android preferences” in the search bar or the Chrome OS launcher. A new window with the Android preferences should open.

Inside android preferences, select the “Apps & notifications” entry, now you will see the list of your installed Android apps. Scroll through to the app that you want to use with SD storage and tap on it. You can also directly search the Android setting for the particular app, as shown in the below image for Plex.

NOTE: If you wish to enable SD card support for multiple applications, you will have to do the same procedure one by one.

Tap on your desired app to enter its “App info” screen, select “Permission” entry and enable “Storage”. Now open the application in question and proceed in settings.

In the case of the Netflix app, change the “Download Location” to external storage. For the Plex app, in order to move data to the expanded storage, you need to update the “sync” option.
