How to Disable Windows 10 Auto-Update

Windows update, they download and install automatically on your computer. Although the automatic approach ensures, that every device receives security updates to patch vulnerabilities and performance stability enhancement.

The updates require a restart to complete the installation and sometimes, it automatically restarts without asking any permission, which can disrupt the current work-flow. So today we will show you methods, how to disable windows 10 auto-update.

Here is how you can do it:

  • Disabling automatic update by using settings.
  • Disable automatic update by group policy.

(User can also disable the updates by setting the internet connection as a metered connection)

you can temporarily stop auto-update using this method, user, and stop updates up to 35 days using this method.

Step 1:

Open Settings

Step 2:

Click Update & Security

Step 3:

Click on Windows Update

Step 4:

Click the Advanced Option Button

Under the ‘pause updates’ selection, use the drop-down menu, and select how long to disable updates.

And you have now disabled the updates until the day you specified.

How to disable automatic update by group policy.

The Local Group Policy Editor allows you to disable automatic updates permanently, or users can the update policies to decide when the update should install on the device.

Step 1:

Open ‘Start

Step 2:

Search ‘gpedit.msc

Step 3:

Navigate the following path:

Computer Configuration > Administration templates > Windows Components > Windows Update.

Step 4:

Double-click the Configure Automatic Updates policy on the right side.

Check the Disable option to turn off the policy and disable automatic updates permanently.

Click Apply

Step 7:

Click OK
