After the iPhone SE 3’s rumored early 2021 release date expired, a new report says it will arrive in 2022 – with sub-6 5G support.
The bad news is that, according to a tweet by display analyst and founder of DisplaySearch Ross Young, the third-generation iPhone SE may have the same 4.7-inch LCD screen as the iPhone SE 2020, which Apple first used in the iPhone 6 in 2014.
That last line does include a ray of hope for iPhone SE fans: a new iteration (and probably fourth generation) of the iPhone SE may be launched in 2023 with a 6.1-inch display with a punch-hole rather than the notch is seen on higher-end iPhones.
The iPhone SE 2023 4th generation… is it OLED?
The 6.1-inch screen size was introduced in the iPhone XR in 2018 and was carried over to the successor iPhone 11, but those were LCD displays. The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro, on the other hand, have 6.1-inch OLED displays, setting a new middle ground flagship screen spec.
That means the iPhone SE 4 (or whatever model arrives in 2023) will have the same 6.1-inch OLED display as the iPhone SE 3 – we know Apple is committed to maintaining the same display technology, so it would be strange if the company released both an LCD and an OLED version of the same-size screen. Finally, the iPhone with the lowest specifications will be able to do away with LCD.
Perhaps more intriguingly, it would suggest that another iPhone is on its way to being a punch-hole device. For years, we’ve heard that flagship iPhones will have them, but the notch is still present in the iPhone 12 series. Without the large top and bottom bezel bars, the iPhone SE 2023 may have an edge-to-edge display.
It’s unclear if this means flagship phones can eventually get rid of the notch. Face ID relies on a variety of sensors, and we don’t expect Apple to abandon them entirely now that it’s spent so much time and money building this security and financial authentication system. However, by 2023, Apple could have switched to a completely different operating system… Alternatively, like the rest of the phone world, have an in-screen fingerprint reader.
