A global internet outage was witnessed on Thursday which downed tens of thousands of websites, including those of giant corporations like Paytm and Zomato. However, contrary to what you may have heard, the downtime was not caused by a hack, data breach, or other kinds of malicious attack.
After the widespread issue came to light, companies began investigations into it. Among the Indian websites affected by the outage included Zomato – the multinational restaurant aggregator and food delivery company.
“Our app is down, due to a widespread Akamai outage. Our teams are working to ensure all orders placed are delivered asap.”, Zomato told users who complained about delayed orders and stuck payments.
According to Akamai Technologies, the outage was not a cyberattack against Akamai’s platform. On the contrary, it was the result of a software configuration upgrade which triggered a bug in the DNS system that redirects browsers to the respective websites. Within an hour, the companies said that the problem had been resolved.
Other organizations and online services that got affected by the outages included FedEx, Fidelity, Home Depot, HSBC, Playstation, Paytm, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, and more.
