Amazon has announced a brand new robot named Astro. Astro is a household robot that should introduce and incorporate Alexa’s skills into more people’s lives. Best described as the love child between a Roomba and an Echo Show smart display, the Astro is meant to be the next step in what Amazon believes to be the seemingly inevitable home robot.
Astro is a robot whose objective is to move around on wheels and it has Amazon’s Alexa Virtual Voice Assistant built into it. Amazon also announced a deal with Walt Disney to imbue its voice-controlled tech in resort hotels.
The robot has a very suiting aesthetic and design with digital eyes on a massive rotating display on wheels. Astro can move at a maximum speed of one meter per second in all directions. It has been designed to take up tasks such as home monitoring, setting up routines and reminders, and can play music and TV shows while rolling around the house. It can raise its periscope camera to show you whether you’ve turned the stove off. It can use third-party accessories to record data like blood pressure.
The Amazon Astro has been priced at a whopping $999 as an introductory price. This cheaper price is likely to be temporary and the regular price will be $1499. Currently, Astro is invite-only and is not available to be bought by the public.
Astro can also identify the floor plan of your house and work accordingly. Astro is a first-generation product so it is not the finest. Its production is not fully sorted yet either which is mainly why it is invite-only for now. Astro does not have hands or cleaners in it so there is plenty of room for improvement but as Amazon’s first try at a robot, the end product is a good purchase!
