India Will Soon Have its Own satellite Internet Service

Elon Musk’s Starlink was the first major company to launch a satellite internet service, with Elon Musk’s other company, SpaceX, helping deploy satellites into lower Earth orbit (LEO).

Since then, many other companies have shown interest in launching their own satellite internet service, one notable example being Amazon’s Project Kuiper, which is still under development.

Seeing this, the UK-based satellite communication company OneWeb, with Airtel’s founder and chairman, Sunil Bharti Mittal, has a 38.6% stake in the company, has joined hands to bring satellite internet services to India in collaboration with the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO).

OneWeb has plans to launch at least 650 satellites in the lower Earth orbit (LEO) to provide fast low latency satellite internet service. With 322 satellites already deployed, OneWeb is looking to expand its deployment capabilities with the help of ISRO’s Launch Vehicle GSLV-MK III.

The GSLV-MK-III, being the heaviest launch vehicle with a weight of 640 tons owned by ISRO, can carry up to 10 tons of payload into the lower-earth orbit, or four tons of cargo into the Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit.

This comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Indian Space Association, which will work as a private body in collaboration with ISRO, which will assist in boosting and ensuring innovation in the intimate space sector.

This seems very promising and will help India compete with international players such as Starlink in the telecom space and help India achieve space supremacy while creating many new jobs and opportunities.
