Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us is reportedly to launch for PlayStation 5. Well, Sony is working on the remake of the game. The first release of the game was in 2013 for PlayStation 3, followed by a remastered version for PlayStation 4 in 2014. For PlayStation 5, the game is intended to include all the features with gameplay and graphical improvements. The improvised version would be in line with the 2020s The Last of Us Part II.
According to a report by Bloomberg, the remake is a part of a bigger reorganization at Sony’s first-party development Studio. It is said that they are struggling between conflicts amongst the major Studios and the smaller teams. The company goals offer their desires to keep the blockbuster-scale projects for its major Studios and other smaller and lucrative projects for the smaller teams.
The Last of Us Part II remake is one such blockbuster project. The remake was originally started by Sony’s Visual Arts Service Group. This group is basically an internal team that supports Sony’s other studios with art, animation and development for much bigger projects like Uncharted games or Spider-Man.
However, the Visual Arts Service Group ended up aspiring for a lower-cost remake of Sony franchises as a good start. This eventually points to the rumours of a “secret” new Sony studio in San Diego that came up last year.
Ignoring the efforts, Sony approved the Visual Arts Service Group’s remake project but tentatively refused to provide the team with a budget for the same. This led the project to be handed over to the original series creator – Naughty Dog. The project is stated to be still in development with the Visual Arts Service Group assisting it.
All these projects are fairly at an early stage. This makes it convenient for Sony to make changes in their plans as to when, how and if these games will be released. According to reports, similar issues arose with Sony’s Bend Studio – the developers of Days Gone. The team apparently pitched for a sequel to this open-world zombie game but saw the rejection. Instead, the team was tasked to help Naughty Dog with a multiplayer project along with the Uncharted game. Bend’s team was too concerned about being totally absorbed into the Naughty Dog’s team that it found profitable to be removed from those projects. As of now, it is working on its own new game.
